Why A Simple Website Is The Most Effective Website

Having your own little corner of the internet is a great idea as a practitioner. But many pracs end up with websites that are complicated, have dozens of pages, or are just difficult to navigate!

In my experience, a simple website is the best type of website a practitioner can have. Let’s have a look at why simple is most effective when it comes to your website.

A simply designed website is clear and easy for people to use

There are plenty of factors that influence whether someone clicks on your website in the first place. But the easier a website is to use, the more likely it is that someone will stay once they have.

You need to ensure that it’s easy for people to learn about who you are, what your services are, and how to book in with you. If they have to click through dozens of pages to do so, they’re likely to give up!

Most practitioners only need a handful of key pages or areas on their website:

  • Home

  • About

  • Services

  • Blog

  • Contact

  • Bookings

  • Shop (optional!)

If you have more than these on your main menu, you might be over-complicating your website.

A simple website is easy for you to navigate and use as well!

It’s great to have a site that is visitor-friendly. But it’s even more important that it’s user-friendly – so that you will actually use it!

Often, this comes down to the design of the website, as well as the platform you use. Most of my clients use Squarespace as their platform of choice because it is simple to use. Simple tasks such as blogging and even making little tweaks to your website copy are a breeze!

A website with one clear form of branding helps to build familiarity and trust

Even when your website isn’t huge, it can still be cluttered and overwhelming. This often comes back to a lack of consistent branding.

In terms of a website, good branding will consist of 2-3 main colours you use, along with your logo, images, fonts and the ‘voice’ you use in your copy. If all of these are the same across each page, it gives a sense of cohesiveness and familiarity. The good thing about that is that it builds trust, especially if it’s consistent across other platforms like social media!

Don’t confuse your visitors by having different colours, fonts, image styles and language on every page. Keep it simple and stick to the branding you have chosen for your business.

A website with simple and clear copy will attract the type of client that you want

As practitioners, it’s easy to slip into science-babble. You know the one with complex terminology where everything ends in ‘itis’ or ‘ological’ or ‘something-something axis’?

Unfortunately, the very language we speak with fellow pracs is completely foreign to the average person. If someone clicks on a site that has unfamiliar words, what will they do? Click back and try the next site on their search! That’s why we need to make sure your website is reader-friendly.

Using clear and concise language will help visitors understand:

  • What you offer

  • Who you work with (and who you don’t)

  • Your style as a health practitioner

  • What they can expect when working with you

It’s easier to build and grow a simple website than it is to cull a complex website

A simple website is great for when you’re starting out. But what happens when your offerings grow? You might want to add a shop to sell online products or even your favourite physical products. Or perhaps you want to host a membership program through your website.

If you start out with a complex website with dozens of pages, you might end up needing to prune some back to make it suit your new offers. This makes it more hard work that has to be done before you can even launch a new offer to your prospective clients!

On the other hand, a simple website is easy to add content and features to.
